Spirituality of Gardening: Sowing Seeds, Tending Hope

Seeds are a miracle of life. Then are a sign of what is possible. They speak to the abundance our Gardener God intends for all creation. This week we hear the parable of the Mustard Seed and visit with Norman Teed at his farm and Jocelyn Quann in her backyard garden.

06-09 Community Hub Update

The construction site at 140 Joyce Avenue continues to be a busy place!
Have you had the chance to drive by? Here are a couple recent updates.

Work on the garden area of the Community Hub continued this week. Over the weekend a few people picked rock from the area. On Tuesday, the ground was tilled to loosen the soil. John Russell is hoping to source some delivery of compost and get seed sown by the weekend!
John was interviewed as part of last week's Spirit Gathering and talked about the measures being taken to remediate the soil and improve organic matter with some different crops this summer/fall.

Meanwhile, our Visions New Ministry Team is meeting with and interviewing other churches in the area of the Hub. We've identified 9 congregations and are speaking with them about their experience of ministry in this part of Moncton, what programs they offer, and seeking to build relationship with these other churches. The interviews are also part of the Community Hub Engagement Team's learning about the community.

Spirituality of Gardening: "Soil of God, You and I"

In the beginning....from humus - soil, dirt, mud of the earth, we are formed and shaped by a gardener God. (Genesis 2)
All life begins and ends with soil. We are Holy Ground. How do we tend the soil of our soul? Join us this week as we explore the spirituality of gardening.

Two of our Visions' friends - John Russell and Fernand Daigle - share wisdom from 'backyard gardens'. We will also have a moment of pause in remembrance for and reconciliation with our Indigenous relations.

06-02 Community Hub Update

The construction site at 140 Joyce Avenue continues to be a busy place!
Have you had the chance to drive by? Here are a couple recent updates.

There's more colour on the Hub side of the building this week as siding continues to be installed around the area of the Multi-Purpose Room.

Last week, John Russell was onsite helping to prepare the soil in the area where trees and gardens will eventually be planted. John writes

"We got the tile drains in, loosened the soil down to 60 cm and got most of the rocks and concrete slabs picked and hauled away. I was really happy with how the ripping seemed to perform. I think it looks really good and ready for a light tilling to break up the compacted clods of subsoil and get in some buckwheat seed (and hopefully compost)".

Last fall, John worked with the site engineers to modify the proposed storm-water retention to include farmable slopes for water retention into the design. Tune in to our June 6 Spirit Gathering and hear John describe what's happening to improve the soil quality and create arable land at the Hub.
