Visions in the Cloud – October 31

Welcome

All Hallow's Eve - All Saints & All Souls Day: Lifting the Thin Veil Between Heaven and Earth

Join us for a special storytelling service. All Hallow's Eve (Halloween) begins a trinity of special days in the Christian faith. On All Saints Day & All Souls Day we remember 'the faithful departed' - all those who have left their mark on us and in this world.

We will honour the names and memory of four individuals from our Visions family, as well as the memory of our own special loved ones. Who is someone from your life, whose memory you cherish and whose life made a difference for you? Together, we will pray a blessing.

Since it is Halloween, bring along your own carved pumpkin and place your candle in it when you join in our on-line service.

Tree Planting

The construction site at 140 Joyce Avenue continues to be a busy place!
Have you had the chance to drive by? Here are a couple recent updates.

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now." - Chinese Proverb

Dan Brooks, the new Executive Director of John Howard quoted this proverb as he welcomed and thanked over 30 volunteers, who gathered at the Community Hub on Joyce this past Monday. We planted 100 trees and shrubs around the property, donated by Trees Canada and a few nurseries from the area. There was lots of shovelling, mud and enthusiasm! Thank you to the 8 volunteers from Visions who helped!

This is just one more step in developing the Urban Garden/Edible Landscape for the Community Hub in partnership with Christine Lund and Natalie Goguen from the Garden Cities Project. This past spring Visions' volunteers Claudia Schaerer, Fernand Daigle, John Russell and Isabelle Melancon prepared a comprehensive list of recommended species for different areas of the property. John Russell continues to volunteer a lot of time and energy with Garden Cities coordinators. The Petitcodiac Watershed Alliance planted a rain garden in the drainage basin area near the residence area. The Gazebo was constructed this summer by SheBuilds, an organization training and integrating women into skilled trades. This is community partnership in action!

There are still more trees and shrubs to be planted next year! You can check out some images of the conceptual design of the landscape

Listening for Autumn's Spiritual Teachings

Are you enjoying the fall colours?

Autumn has much to teach us about the rhythm of our spirit, and about the way of Jesus and the call of faith (John 12: 23-26).

Gather a few colourful leaves, light your candle, and join us for some soul time.

Welcome

"Live Your Mission"

Our generosity transforms lives. On this World Food Day Sunday we consider how our gifts to Mission & Service and local community food ministries help end hunger.

The Wisdom of Matthew 13:1-9 (Parable of the Sower) affirms, together, we are "daring a difference, one act of kindness at a time."

Visions in the Cloud – October 10

Welcome

Gratitude and Anxiety

It’s Thanksgiving week, and we have much to be thankful for in our lives. Yet news of Covid restrictions and being unable to be with our friends and family has us anxious and dispirited. How can we show gratitude when our lives are turned upside down? We turn to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6: 25-33 for wisdom.

10-08 Community Hub Update

The construction site at 140 Joyce Avenue continues to be a busy place!
Have you had the chance to drive by? Here are a couple recent updates.

We are getting closer! The flooring in the Multi-purpose room was installed this week. A welder was onsite working on the permanent railing for the walkway. Various tradespeople are attending to many finishing details. There were cleaners on-site beginning to clean away the construction dust on the first floor. We expect occupancy will be soon! Stay tuned.

World Wide Communion Sunday October 3rd

Praying a Blessing with Breads of the World
Churches all over the world join as 'one body in Christ' and celebrate Communion.
Apart - yet together - in Spirit, our Visions family of faith will celebrate communion this Sunday.
Using a variety of breads we will reflect on needs in our world.

We invite you to 'set' a table for worship with your symbols.

Bring a little bread/cracker and juice/water for Communion.
Light your Christ Candle
All are welcome at the Table of Jesus Christ.

10-01 Community Hub Update

The construction site at 140 Joyce Avenue continues to be a busy place!
Have you had the chance to drive by? Here are a couple recent updates.

We have pavement! The parking lot was paved early this week and lines painted.
Inside, work on the stairwells is underway with flooring and railings installed.

Visions volunteer, Doug Bourque, began working on the shelving and cabinets for our Music/ Worship room this week. Doug worked with an inventory of our equipment and has designed shelving to maximize the wall space for storage in this room, while providing a workspace for Daphna. He also built two mobile carts. One to hold choir song books and folders, and a second for copies of songbooks for the congregation.Take a look at the picture, and notice the nice touch of our Visions logo painted on the sides of the cart! Thanks, Doug!

09-30 National Truth & Reconciliation Day Vigil

Late Thursday afternoon rain threatened to cancel the Community Vigil that Visions planned to mark the first National Truth & Reconciliation Day in the parking lot of the Community Hub on Joyce.

Should we cancel or postpone? As we wavered with indecision, people began arriving. We proceeded: some 22 people came in spite of the rain. Thank you for showing up!

Readers gathered under the front porch, others sat on lawn chairs and held umbrellas, and some people sat in their car with a window rolled down to listen.

Our ceremony was somewhat shorter than originally planned. We began with a Land Acknowledgement. Then, we read aloud a summary of each of the 94 Calls to Action, punctuated by the sound of a drum beat calling us to honour these calls with action. We ended the time with a moment of silence and prayer.

A special thank you, too, to Jane Aikman for preparing all the Call to Action cards, to John Foster for the drumming, and Brian Affleck for the sound.

This was our first community 'event' at the Community Hub on Joyce.
